Konkani language agitation’s first martyr Floriano Vaz was remembered by his relatives and well wishers at the Gogol traffic junction, even as local ST leader Camilo Barretto demanded the resignation of Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal for demanding equal status for Marathi language.
Floriano’s brother and others paid floral tributes to the martyr at his bust to mark the day when he fell to the police bullets near his house on December 20, nearly 29 years ago at the height of the agitation demanding official status for Konkani language.
Taking strong exception to the demand being raised by the Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal to bestow official language status for Marathi language, Camilo demanded the immediate resignation of the Bicholim MLA from the membership of the Goa Legislative Assembly and migrate to neighbouring Mahahrastra.
“Sawal should contest from Maharashtra after quitting his seat. He has no right to demand official language status for Marathi in Goa,” Camilo said.
He also demanded that the government provide a job to the kith and kin of Floriano, saying that many politicians in the past had promised employment to the relatives of the deceased, but in vain. “There were promises galore to even restore the house of the martyr. The promise to provide government jobs to the relatives of Floriano has still not been fulfilled till date,” Camilo said.
