Accidental healer: Dr Damodar’s journey from design to wellness

Andrea Costa was suffering from severe lower back pain and was unable to move. Neither could she walk, nor sit, or sleep. “I consulted three orthopaedics, was given painkillers, yet nothing worked. I was on bed rest for two weeks, unable to move. However, after visiting Yeshwant Wellness, I was able to walk and experience a tremendous change in my movements. No medicines were given. It was all chiropractic therapy. The very first sitting gave me much relief. After five sittings, I was completely out of pain,” shares Andrea.

Dr Damodar Dicholkar is a chiropractor and also an expert in other alternative therapies like Acupuncture, Acupressure, Sujok, TEM, and Auricular. A BSc graduate, he chose to be an interior designer for 18 years before he decided to quit the profession due to labour scarcity. Today, he has degrees and diplomas – BAMT, DAT, D Acu, D Aur, D TEM, Sujok (ISA), DCB (USA), D M Chiro (Ghana) – and has been awarded an honorary doctorate in Integrative Medicine (Honoris Causa) from WEBBIC University (Ghana).

Dr Damodar, who runs Yeshwant Wellness, shares, “Chiropractic therapy helps in spine alignment and offers relief in multiple body pains. I learnt Traditional Energy Medicine (TEM) from Dr Basavaraj K. It’s the balancing of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) with single-point treatment using black pepper seeds for tonification and fenugreek seeds for sedation on the Sujok Byol Meridian Chart.”

“Another healing method that I adopt is Sujok, which is a combination of two Korean words – Su (hands) and Jok (feet) – and means treating on hands and feet. It’s a treatment that massages hands and feet and is used to treat several conditions like bronchitis, asthma, headaches, dizziness, migraines, gastritis, ulcers, diabetes, and also mental disorders like depression, etc. It is also known to be effective in weight loss. Sujok acupuncture is a natural therapy of healing without drugs or medications. It gives instant and effective relief, is safe, and has no side effects,” claims Dr Damodar, who has mastered Sujok.

Similar is Acupressure and Acupuncture, which involves activating specific points on the external body to offer relief to the specific body organ associated with this point. While Acupressure is just applying pressure on the point, Acupuncture stimulates the point with a very thin needle that does not cause pain while pricking. Having mastered these techniques, Dr Damodar uses them while treating various ailments and diseases. When the body is not at ease, it gets disease (dis-ease), so bringing the body to its original ‘at-ease’ position relieves it from dis-ease, he explains.

Auricular therapy, or Auriculotherapy, is based on the idea that the ear is a micro system and an external organ that reflects the entire body, represented on the auricle (the outer portion of the ear). Physical, mental, or emotional health conditions are assumed to be treatable by stimulating the surface of the ear. “Conditions affecting the physical, mental, or emotional health of the patient are assumed to be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively,” explains Dr Damodar, who transitioned from interior designing to mastering various alternative techniques and therapies to offer relief to suffering souls.

Yeshwant Wellness offers suitable alternative treatments to people suffering from aches and pains. Today, 2,500 people have benefited from Dr Damodar’s expertise in various alternative therapies, and he doesn’t require any advertisement. People who get cured spread the word to others in similar conditions, and the number of visitors keeps increasing. It’s been more than nine years now that Damodar has successfully managed to shift from interior designer of material objects to interior designing of the body.

Damodar shares how he faced labour scarcity and found it difficult to complete the projects he undertook within a time frame. So much so that he had to borrow labour from his friend, who was in the same business, to complete the projects at hand before saying goodbye to his business forever, for this very reason of labour paucity.

Damodar decided to take a break from the hectic schedule, travelling from site to site across various locations in Goa. Daily travelling had given him chronic backache in 2001. With ongoing work assignments at hand, he was unable to look after his health and neglected his backache for a long time. He had visited several doctors for a cure and tried different treatments, but all in vain. The backache was persistent.

Then came a day when Damodar was at a xerox store photocopying some documents. He saw a poster stuck on the wall of that store, displaying auto-therapy in acupressure. Requesting a copy of the same, he came back and tried it on his hands to see if he could get some relief from his backache. And to his surprise, he did get relief. After a few sessions of searching for acupressure points on his hands and applying pressure on the painful ones, Damodar got rid of his backache completely.

“It was a miracle. I began believing in the success of acupressure therapy, which needed no doctor, pills, balms, or syrups. Just putting pressure on the painful points for a few minutes daily, and within days or weeks, one gets completely rid of the pain,” shares Damodar, who was so impressed by the results himself that he suggested this non-invasive therapy to one of his friends, Subhash, a businessman from Margao. Subhash was suffering from backache and was suggested surgery of the spine.

Damodar asked him if he could try acupressure on Subhash’s hands and see if the pain reduced. Then and there, Damodar conducted the practical, and Subhash began smiling as he was feeling better. The next day, Subhash came to Damodar’s home and asked him to do it again. Damodar obliged. Within weeks, Subhash was out of the painful condition, and his surgery was cancelled as the pain was no more. Subhash’s wife, too, got relief from severe vertigo.

Motivated by this incident, Damodar then began taking an interest in acupressure therapy and enrolled for formal, systematic, and scientific training. After completing the course, he began suggesting and offering this acupressure therapy to whosoever he found in pain – cervical spondylitis, upper, middle, or lower back pain, ankle or knee pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, sciatica, migraine, etc., reducing their pain. This was the birth of Yeshwant Wellness.

Not stopping at this, Damodar began learning several other alternative therapies, too, so that holistic healing could be offered to sufferers.

“It’s a drugless path towards good health,” asserts Damodar, who charges per session. Through the Chiropractic method, he does full body adjustment (not fracture). “I don’t entertain patients if surgery has already been conducted. Before going for surgery, one can try these alternative therapies to check if the last resort of surgery can be avoided. Many of my patients have succeeded in doing that and are now living a pain-free life without having to go for a surgical procedure,” asserts Dr Damodar.

All he asks is that the person bring with them a long, soft towel or dupatta and be on time for the appointment. The number of sessions required may depend upon the severity of the complaint and is decided at the time of the session, he adds.
