Demand for legalising the banned bullfights has once again taken the center stage.

While Independent MLA Vijai Sardesai has taken up the issue with Chief Minister Laxmimant Parsekar, who has in turn asked the Fatorda MLA to examine the matter in detail, the Bull Fight Owners Association has also stepped up its campaign for the early legalisation of the banned sport.

The bull owners have arranged a meeting with Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva, who has taken up the cudgels for the owners with the government. A meeting was scheduled to take place between the Benaulim MLA and the bull owners, but the same stands postponed for later this week.

Caitu told The Goan that he fully subscribes to the lifting of the ban by making proper arrangements, including a ground for the event. “We had discussed the matter with Law Minister Francis D’Souza and the government is open to bringing a Bill in the State Assembly,” he said.

Fatorda independent MLA Vijai Sardessai, who had demanded that the two BJP MPs take up the issue of legalising bullfights in Goa with Union Environment Minister Prakash Javdekar, said he has taken up the issue with the Chief Minister.

“This is one pending demand of Goans which needs to be addressed by the government. I have spoken to the Chief Minister who is open on the issue and has called for its detailed examination,” Vijai said, adding that he would meet a delegation of bullfight owners to discuss the issue threadbare.

A week ago, owners of bulls from Salcete’s coastal belt had called on MLA Caitu Silva with a plea to permit bullfights along the belt.
