Goa is geared up to host the sacred exposition of the relics of St Francis Xavier, a momentous event expected to draw millions of pilgrims from across the world. The Exposition comes barely over a month after the State was at a crossroads with unsettling utterances and divisive rhetoric triggering religious intolerance. The communal harmony that has been a hallmark of Goa has faced several stress tests in recent times.
Against the backdrop of simmering tensions among sections of communities, the exposition serves as a healing balm for the scars inflicted by forces that have been periodically attempting to sow seeds of hatred. This long-anticipated occasion carries immense significance not just for the Catholic community but all communities who are rooted in the faith of the saint.
St Francis Xavier, one of the key figures of the Jesuit order, is celebrated as a missionary who spread the Gospel across Asia, particularly in India. His legacy is not merely of historical reverence but one that resonates with ideals of love, compassion, and unity. However, his influences were not on Catholics alone. He had the confidence of various other communities, especially Hindus, and the mutual respect was reflected during interactions. There are stories of how St Francis protected the Hindu kingdom of Travancore in the 16th century by driving away the attacking Bagadas.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the Old Goa heritage site and reviewed the infrastructural preparedness. He inaugurated the Pilgrim Village and announced that accommodation would be free during the Exposition. The CM came in for praise from church authorities and his cabinet colleagues for consistently following up on work and ensuring all promises were met in time. The role of the state government must be appreciated because it comes against the backdrop of the Centre not accepting the request for financial help. It may be recalled, that the State government had asked the Centre for a grant of Rs 300 crore for the 18th Exposition. From improving amenities to ensuring safety and accessibility for pilgrims, the government has lived up to its promise of upholding the heritage of Goa.
On the flip side, it is sad that much against the talk of 'spiritual tourism' the State merely flattered to deceive. It was announced that there will be an extensive promotion of the event at the World Travel Mart in London, as well as promos in parts of Europe. However, stakeholders were of the view that there has been a lack of planning, marketing and strategising to reach out to international destinations, leaving a question mark on global numbers. The TTAG president opines that there is interest from NRIs and followers from parts of Europe and Asia, but cites a lack of coordination, focus and long-term planning.
As the sacred relics are brought down for public veneration, the Exposition of St Francis Xavier stands not merely as a religious event, but as a crucial moment in our collective journey toward healing, tolerance, and community service. Let us embrace this occasion not just with our hearts, but as a reaffirmation of our commitment to a future where love triumphs over division, and unity emerges from the shared experience of faith.
