Jewish person awarded Austrian citizenship at function in Goa

The Honorary Austrian Consulate in Goa recently hosted an official function to celebrate Austrian National Day. Alexio Sequeira, Minister for Law and Judiciary of Goa was the chief guest, also present was Her Excellency Katharina Wieser, Ambassador of Austria to India and Dattaraj V. Salgaocar, Honorary Consul for Austria in Goa.

On the occasion, Austrian citizenship documents were handed over to Ilan Grossman from Israel. The citizenship was granted based on Austria’s policy that grants citizenship to descendants of Jewish persons who were forced to migrate to escape persecution during the Nazi German occupation of Austria in the 1940’s. During her address to the gathering, the ambassador mentioned that there are over 30,000 persons worldwide who have received citizenship under this rule. However, she said that this is the first time in India that Austrian citizenship is being granted under this rule.
