LONDON

A Goan who achieved the distinction of becoming the first Indian and Goan Mayor of the Swindon Borough Council has said his aim is to bring all communities together, to unitedly put in the effort to building a stronger Swindon.

Imtiyaz Shaikh (43), who hails from Vasco, is presently employed as manager for the DHL Supply Chain in Swindon. He is the third mayor of Goan origin in the UK and will serve as Mayor of Swindon for a one-year term.

When asked what had made him consider entering council politics and running for the post of mayor, despite all the responsibilities and challenges associated with the post, Imtiyaz believed that representation is the key to not only building strong foundations but to also connect with all communities who call Swindon home.

“I am proud to be the first Indian Goan Mayor of Swindon and am extremely excited to work with all communities. My family has always supported me in this journey so that I could work for the community despite the challenges,” said Imtiyaz.

“Ever since I can remember, I’ve always believed in the concept of shattering your own glass ceiling. I’ve grown up actively wanting to champion change and offering to others more than I had for myself.”

“I am a firm believer in the concept of a Mayor for all, I believe that every resident of Swindon has a right to have their voice heard, to feel that they belong and are welcomed here and that their aspirations and beliefs are respected.”

Admitting that residents and their families continue to face many challenges, Imtiyaz said there is big work ahead of them in continuing the transformation of Swindon.

“We must all collectively do everything possible, within our power as a local authority, to continue to support residents and families and our public services through the rising cost-of-living crisis.”

Asked to specify his priorities as Mayor of Swindon, Imtiyaz replied: “As the First Citizen of Swindon and during my Mayoral term I aim to bring all communities together, to unitedly put in the effort to building a stronger Swindon.”

GOAN CONNECT

Imtiyaz represents a growing number of Goans who are now contesting council elections across the UK in recent years and has also extended his support to Goans to join council politics.

“As a Councillor I have been successful in helping members of the Goan community to join politics and in helping them to understand the purpose behind the role,” said Imtiyaz.

“I have always been a Labour man, the party’s ethics and beliefs is what I stand with, and I strongly believe anyone thinking of joining must join the Labour Party. It has always supported communities like ours and given us the equal opportunities and protection in the UK.”

“Sadly, all other parties attempt to divide us for their gain such as Brexit. The existing government have closed down Youth & Children’s Centres, they’re looking to privatise NHS, they’ve underfunded police services, cut school meal funding and much more. I urge everyone to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who will work for our better future in the UK.”
