Carnival for Goans in Sharjah

The St Michael’s Sharjah Goan Community (SMSGC) revived its annual picnic for all Goans residing in Sharjah after a gap of three years on account of the Covid pandemic.

Over 200 Goans attended the picnic on the theme ‘Colourful Picnic at the Park’ on February 11, which consisted of competitions, games and even a carnival parade.

“The SMSGC committee comprising Agnelo Rodriques, Savio Braganza, Marionette Mendes, Peter Periera, Lazio Fernandes, Drina Braganza, Nerissa Fernandes, Mark Fernandes, Mary Baretto and I decided that it was time to make up for the last 3 years,” said Xavier Azavedo.

“We had planned a full-day picnic which would start from breakfast and lunch till evening snack and sunset. This picnic was free for all Goans.”

The Goans were divided into four groups which were named after the Goan cities of Mapusa, Panjim, Vasco and Margao, with each group comprising around 50 people.

“We had around 7-8 games based on which the points were counted. The winners of these games were the ‘Margao’ group, but we ensured that all teams participating would not go empty-handed and so, we had chocolate for all participating in the games,” said Azavedo.

There were fancy dress competitions for children between 3 and 12 years, with all 15 children participating in the contest given gifts to motivate them.

In addition, the picnic included Bingo, spot prizes and a lucky draw for the mask, which was used for the Carnival Parade where all the Groups dressed up in colourful costumes. The King Momo was Peter Pereira and the Queen was Mary Baretto.

“Our Spiritual Director Fr Denis Saldanha was also present at the picnic. The picnic was widely appreciated by the Goans. The St Michael’s Sharjah Goan Committee aims to ensure that we get all Goan together and spread the love to all by demonstrating unity within the community,” added Azavedo.
