Chairman of Dempo Group of Companies Shrinivas Dempo has advised Goan youth in Qatar to have long-term vision and to be ready to work hard.
He was interacting with a cross-section of Goans while on a recent one-day visit to Qatar to deliver a talk at the Leadership Summit "Leadership Challenges in the Current Scenario”, organised by Qatar Indian Management Association (QIMA).
“It is such a nice feeling to meet you all here in Qatar. I have been to Qatar four times and every time I see the rapid strides the country is making,’ said Dempo, who is also the President of All India Management Association.
FOOTBALL
Recalling his FIFA World Cup experience in Qatar, Dempo said of the seven World Cups he has attended so far, “Qatar was undoubtedly the best.”
The Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, alumni complimented the Qatar leadership for having a vision and working towards making it a reality.
Dempo is not new to football having served as Vice President of All India Football Federation and his club Dempo Sports Club, one of the top clubs in the country, has won the then top tier national Championship I League on several occasions.
The I League which has since lost its relevance with the advent of the Indian Super League (ISI).
GOAN CONNECT
Dempo took special interest in the Goans and inquired from which parts of Goa they hailed from.
Goans in Qatar were appreciative of the role the Dempo has played in Goan society through their social and sporting causes and urged him to continue doing so.
The Goans in Qatar also acknowledged the role of the Dempo group of companies in helping Goan youth to have a foothold in various industries and the Dempo house contribution to Goan and Indian football.
“We appreciate the contribution of Dempo Group in several sectors and wish them further success,” Ambrosio Dias, a retired banker hailing from Sirsaim said at the meet, which was coordinated by John De Sa along with his team.
While welcoming him to Qatar, De Sa thanked the House of Dempo for creating jobs in their companies.
“Many Goans, in the past and in the present, were and are part of the Dempo workforce in different sectors and industries like mines, transportation, barges, shipyards, transshippers, etc. and the football team Dempo Sports Club, where many Goan footballers became international footballers,” he recalled.
“We want the Dempo legacy to continue,” added De Sa.
Mauricio Pereira, a sportsperson and Tiatr promoter in Qatar, asked questions related to the Dempo football team and its future.
“We want Dempo Sports Club to continue and be a torchbearer of Goan football in India and Asia and we wish them all the best,” said Pereira, who hails from Curtorim.
ADVICE
Dempo said there is no substitute for hard work and the younger generation of Goans should realise it and be ready for the competitive world.
“Goan youth should not have short-term goals but long-term vision and should be ready to work hard. United, we can achieve a lot of things,” he said, when asked what his advice for Goan youth.
Earlier, Asteria Pereira, a 5-year-old girl hailing from Pomburpa, handed a flower bouquet and welcomed Dempo to Qatar on behalf of the Goans in Qatar.
