Goan bodybuilder wins prizes at contest in UK

LONDON

Somesh Velguekar, owner of Impact Gym & Fitness in Goa, India, has won the first place at the men’s physique category at the FMC pro card British men’s bodybuilding fitness competition in the over 35+ category, which was held recently in London. 

Somesh also won the second prize at the classic physique category and was placed third in the overall men’s fitness competition.

“In all, 85 competitors from different parts of the UK and Europe participated in 21 different categories at the competition. Besides, 38 female bodybuilders from different parts of the world also took part in the contest,” said Somesh.

“I was the only Indian men’s bodybuilder and among 8 Asian bodybuilders to have taken part in the contest.”

For Somesh, this was his second international bodybuilding competition 

“This prestigious international event was a day of intense competition and extraordinary athleticism. The event provided a global platform for bodybuilders to showcase their dedication and sculpted physiques,” said Somesh.

Somesh acknowledged the support and guidance from his coach Lloyd from UK, coach Govind from Goa India’s (Infinite Gym) Coach Ashwini Kumar (Impact Gym Anjuna), and Coach Valario Fernandes UK. 

“My wife, Sinatra, family and friends have played also a key role in my success,” acknowledged Somesh.

BOOST TO GOAN BODYBUILDERS

Somesh’s participation marked a significant milestone for Goan bodybuilders and highlighted the international scope of the competition, underscoring the growing prominence of Goan athletes in the bodybuilding community. 

When asked about the motivation behind competing in London, Somesh explained, “The goal has been to create an international platform for Indian and Goan bodybuilders, allowing them to participate on a global stage.” 

Somesh explained that his Impact Gym has always been committed to fitness excellence. 

“By partnering with British Physique Alliance (BPA), we’re ensuring a professionally organised event that features various categories, accommodating different body types and experience levels. This approach makes the competition accessible to both seasoned competitors and newcomers.”

Before moving to the UK, Somesh was actively involved in bodybuilding and gym management in Goa. 

Somesh said he plays to organise a Super Show Impact Gym Classic 2 next year powered by BPA in London on in July. 

“This is a good opportunity to Goans and international bodybuilders to take part international level events. My upcoming event in Goa is ‘Mr Impact Vol 2’ in March 2025. At this event, I will give 2 pro cards to winners who can come and compete in the UK.”

With a deep passion for bodybuilding, Somesh said he always wanted to elevate the level of Goan bodybuilding to an international standard.

“I encourage Goans to embrace this sport and support their local athletes,” said Somesh.

Earlier this year, Somesh had stood sixth at the Amateur SuperShow men’s physique bodybuilding organised by the BPA in London on October 26.
