MELBOURNE
A Goan singer has been making waves at the Season 13 of the Australian singing competition television series ‘The Voice’.
Reuben De Melo (31), who hails from Maina-Curtorim and is presently based in Perth, Western Australia, has qualified to proceed ahead in the competition.
Reuben said his love for music began ever since his family moved to Australia when he was 11 years.
“I picked up the guitar from my dad and I would play at Goan functions,” said Reuben, a mine worker by profession.
“I am currently on Season 13 of The Voice Australia. It's by far, my biggest musical achievement.”
Reuben is currently working with the coach LeAnn Rimes for The Voice contest, and he described her as an “incredible mentor.”
According to a report in the Australian news channel ‘TV Central’, Reuben stunned the four coaches with an incredible Blind Audition, and they gave him a standing ovation.
While LeAnn was moved to tears, Kate Miller-Heidke, a fellow coach on the show, remarked “You just sang that better than Ed Sheeran,” marvelled Kate, for Reuben’s rendition of Ed Sheeran’s ‘I See Fire’.
Added the third coach Guy Sebastian: “That’s one of my favourite auditions I’ve ever heard on the show.”
Incidentally, Reuben himself did not apply to participate in The Voice.
“My wife, Olivia, signed me up for the contest. Olivia has been my rock and support. I also appreciate all the support from friends and Goans in Melbourne, Western Australia, and all across the world,” acknowledged Reuben.
Reuben said his biggest musical icon have been Bob Marley and The Wailers.
“And, of course, as grew up, my grandma would listen to a lot of songs sung by Goa’s nightingale Lorna and old songs from the audio cassettes,” said Reuben.
Reuben has invited Goans to tune into the rest of his journey at The Voice. Viewers across the world can follow Reuben’s journey via the link: https://7plus.com.au/
