Goans in Geneva mark St Francis Xavier’s feast

GENEVA

As part of its tradition of celebrating the Feast of St Francis Xavier, the Goan community in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted an event on December 1 for the fifth consecutive year.

The community, known as ‘Goan Amigos’ consists of around 150 members, including adults and children. This informal gathering of Goans in Switzerland, though not organised under a formal club or association, is united by a shared bond through their cultural and religious celebrations. The members work together to uphold their traditions and create a welcoming environment for all.

Throughout the year, the Goan Amigos group organises several key events that help the community connect and celebrate its heritage. These include the St Francis Xavier Feast, São João, Christmas, and New Year celebrations. Each event provides an opportunity for the community to maintain its cultural roots and foster a sense of unity.

The St Francis Xavier Feast is undoubtedly the highlight of the year for the Goan Amigos. This year marked the fifth anniversary of the event.

Special guests, including Father Andrew, one of the oldest and most respected priests in the community, and Father Aleston Vaz, who flew in from Rome for the occasion, added to the significance of the celebration.

The event was filled with entertainment, with local band DJ Standley providing music and a lively atmosphere. The community also showcased its philanthropic spirit, with funds raised during the summer karemasse event, which were donated to support their church and other charitable causes, including initiatives in Goa.

A standout feature of this year's St Francis Xavier Feast was the lavish dinner, which featured traditional Goan dishes prepared by different families. Each family took responsibility for bringing a specific dish, ensuring a diverse and abundant spread. This collaborative effort not only showcased the community's culinary skills but also brought everyone together in a spirit of sharing.

The evening included a lively dance party, with performances by both children and adults who had rehearsed their routines in advance.

The celebration of the St Francis Xavier’s Feast is a testament to their strong sense of identity and community, as they continue to preserve their cultural heritage while fostering connections in Switzerland.

In addition to religious events, the Goan Amigos group organises social activities such as barbecues, outings, and parties, which strengthen the bonds among members. These gatherings extend beyond the religious context, allowing the community to connect and form lasting friendships.
