Swindon Goans continue to celebrate Christmas with the same spirit as they did back home, and this year, Goan Mayor of Swindon Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh celebrated Christmas at the Council with a festive gathering that brought joy and community spirit.

The Council Chamber was beautifully decorated with twinkling lights, a Christmas tree adorned with ornaments, and wreaths hanging on the doors. A banquet was prepared, featuring various traditional Goan delicacies like Bebinca.

A local children’s choir group ‘Rhythimix Goa’ performed classic carols and holiday tunes, creating a joyful and melodious atmosphere throughout the evening which was enjoyed by all.

In his speech, Mayor Imtiyaz Shaikh reflected on the year's achievements and expressed gratitude to the council members and community. Toasts were made to celebrate unity and goodwill, that fostered a spirit of giving and kindness.

Generous donations were made by local caterers and community groups were also invited to participate. A special appearance by Santa Claus delighted the children present, as he handed out sweets and listened to their Christmas wishes.

The celebration was a warm and vibrant event, emphasising togetherness, joy, and the Christmas spirit within the community.

Additionally, within the Goan community itself, Councillor Ana Fernandes & Councillor Princia Fernandes teamed up with volunteers and parents to host a carol singing competitions, promoting the festivities of Christmas.

Included within these were competitions hosted by Parish Councillor Joseph Pereira who encouraged residents to participate in Christmas Lights Competition.

“We continue to have several of our catering business create mouth-watering Goan Christmas sweets and delicacies for sale, the tantalising aromas reminding us of our childhood memories growing up back home in Goa,” said Swindon Councillor Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, who is the wife of Mayor Imtiyaz Shaikh.

“Especially during the festive period and also within remits as local ward councillor, I have always supported outreach activities for the community and ward I represent. In 2022, I was able to place a beautiful 25-foot tree in the heart of our Community and this year was no different!”

"We had our very own Goan children Rhythmix Group headed by Vance Machado & Sizzling Stars headed by Sheila D’Costa who were carol singing to the residents,” said Adorabelle.

Besides this, members of the Swindon Goan Volunteers & Helping Hearts Group do many outreach activities for the wider community in Swindon.

They raise funds for the homeless, donate presents to children with special needs during Christmas, and have also made many donations to local food banks.
