GSCC brings Carnival magic to Delhi

DELHI

The Goan Sports & Cultural Club (GSCC) once again brought the Carnival spirit to life, uniting the Goan community in Delhi for a day of joy, tradition, and celebration.

The clubhouse was transformed into a vibrant spectacle, adorned with colourful tinsel and pennants, while guests arrived in festive attire, ready to revel in the festivities.

As with every grand occasion, the day began with a Holy Mass in English, setting a reverent and uplifting tone. The choir, led by Aaron and Melvin, filled the hall with soulful melodies, culminating in the beloved Konkani hymn, ‘San Francis Xaviera’. A song deeply rooted in Goan heritage, it resonated with the entire congregation, who sang along with heartfelt devotion.

After a breakfast, the celebration took on a lively rhythm as guests changed into vibrant carnival costumes, complete with masks, wigs, and flamboyant accessories. Leading the Carnival Parade was Joseph Noronha (Joint Sports Secretary), dressed as King Momo, marching across the club lawns to the beats of Goan music, setting the tone for a day filled with energy and excitement.

This year’s celebration was extra special as GSCC marked its 70th anniversary—a milestone that called for a grand tribute. GSCC President Alex Fernandes cut a commemorative cake, taking a moment to thank everyone—past and present—who contributed to the club’s journey over the decades. A beautifully crafted memento celebrating 70 years was presented to all in attendance.

Fernandes also took the opportunity to applaud the sports committee for their remarkable performance in the Delhi Soccer Association League held last month.

The energy remained high as the emcees, Ezekiel Fernandes (Vice President) and Deanne Fernandes (Executive Member), engaged the crowd with games and interactive activities. Dressed in brilliantly creative costumes, participants took to the stage to showcase their outfits and talents. The spotlight shone on Margaret and Jahdev Dorairaj, who were crowned Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gentleman respectively, adding an extra touch of glamour to the event.

A sumptuous lunch brought people together once again, followed by an enthusiastic round of Tambola, where cheers and laughter filled the air. Guests praised Fernandes and his team for orchestrating such a memorable and well-organised event, emphasising how these gatherings keep the Goan community connected and thriving in Delhi.

As the day came to a close, Fernandes delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, reaffirming GSCC’s commitment to keeping the Goan spirit alive and promising more exciting events in the future.

With music, laughter, and a deep sense of togetherness, the Goan community in Delhi celebrated Carnival in true Goan style, a day filled with joy, nostalgia, and the promise of many more celebrations to come.

The Goan Sports & Cultural Club was established in 1954 to promote football and Goan culture in Delhi. It has played a key role in uniting the Goan community in the capital, fostering a strong sense of belonging and cultural pride.

The club has been appreciated for organising vibrant events that celebrate Goan traditions, such as the much-anticipated Christmas Dance, Carnival, Christmas Tree, members picnic and the lively San Joao festival.

Over the years, the Goans Sports and Cultural Club has flourished, expanding its reach and strengthening the community bond. The club not only promotes sports and cultural activities but also organises charitable initiatives like visits to old people homes and orphanages thus helping the underprivileged.

By blending sports and cultural initiatives, the club has evolved into a vibrant hub that nurtures talent, encourages social interaction, and keeps Goan heritage alive in Delhi.
