Konkani community radio was celebrated in the UK when it featured at the 40th Community Media (Radio) Festival 2023 at Leicester-UK, the birthplace of local radio, followed by the fifth anniversary of the Konkani radio show ‘Konkani Uloi London Fuloi’.

FESTIVAL AT LEICESTER

RJ Roque Vaz, producer, director, presenter of Europe’s first and sole Konkani radio show ‘Konkani Uloi London Fuloi’ broadcasted weekly every Saturday in UK from Awaaz 99.8 FM UK (Southampton) and his team of Creative Director Bihula Vaz and Awaaz FM CEO Ali Beg Bhai were invited to participate at the 40th Community Media (Radio) Festival 2023 on October 28.

RJ Roque addressed the audience of community radio presenters, broadcasters, producers, content creators, funding organisations, the press, radio project managers and station directors from all over the United Kingdom, speaking at length about the community radio success story of the Konkani radio show.

He also highlighted the use of social media platforms in promoting and spreading the Konkani radio show not just in the United Kingdom but in several countries where the Konkani-speaking diaspora is active.

“Konkani is the language spoken by the inhabitants of the Konkan region spread across the globe and the beautiful language is the vehicle of our culture, heritage, literature and traditions,” remarked RJ Roque Vaz at the festival.

KONKANI RADIO ANNIVERSARY

RJ Roque Vaz’s Konkani radio show ‘Konkani Uloi London Fuloi’ broadcasted weekly in the United Kingdom completed five years on November 4. It was first broadcasted from the Southampton studio of Awaaz FM Community Radio Station on November 2, 2018. 

The show will broadcast its 175th episode on the airwaves on November 11 and the topic is Diwali, the festival of lights. 

The content of the show consists of Konkani songs, poetry, news, current affairs, live audience interaction with worldwide audience producing real-time comments, recipes, short stories, interesting articles and anecdotes along with a children’s section. 

RJ Roque also reads live the content and headlines from the Global Goenkar Saturday special page of The Goan Everyday newspaper published from Goa.

The results of a Konkani poetry competition, ‘Lokpriy Kovita Spordha 2023’ (Viewers’ Choice Poetry Contest 2023), organised under the aegis of Konkani Kovita Academy of UK, were also announced during the fifth anniversary show. 

Poetess and stage actress Manisha Pereira won the first prize of Rs 10,000 for her poem ‘Maim Ti Maim’. 

Popular Konkani stage actress and poetry reciter Valency De Calangute and noted poet Anthony Correia Pienkar jointly bagged the second prize of Rs 7,500 for the poem ‘Yatrekaranchi Yatra’ and the third prize was scooped up by poet Menino Fernandes for his poem ‘Paus’, which consisted of a cash prize of Rs 5,000. 

All cash prizes have been sponsored by the radio show’s creative director, Bihula Vaz. Awaaz FM was the media partner of the poetry contest.
