Students of computer science at BITS Pilani Goa campus, Aviral Kumar Goel and Vaibhav Ganatra won this year’s Prof Suresh Ramaswamy Memorial Award for their innovative and humanitarian project titled ‘Smart stick for visually impaired’ which was selected from amongst 10 shortlisted projects. The award comprising Rs 40,000 and certificate is awarded annually to a team of students with an aim to encourage and nurture them to work on a project idea in the field of science/engineering. This award is aimed to be a milestone in inspiring young and innovative minds to adventure in the realm of untapped propositions. The Smart Stick, envisaged under their innovative project, will prove to be of immense help for the visually impaired to navigate independently. The camera module can be attached easily to any walking cane and it sends a real-time video stream to a mobile application that performs object recognition and object detection, and guides the visually impaired using audio feedback.
