The Department of English at Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, (Autonomous) attended the Kala Ghoda Arts & Literary Festival at Mumbai, from January 24 to 28 as a part of their annual field trip to the festival spanning over a decade. Fifteen English Major, and Double Major students and two professors, Asst Prof Loretta Rodrigues and Asst Prof Andrew Barreto, attended five days of the nine-day long programme that consisted of various literary sessions, workshops, heritage walks, book chats and more. The students (from the departmental club English Tygers) attended at least 28 various sessions through the days. On day one itself they met with the curator of the literature section of the festival, Pervin Saket, at the newly restored David Sassoon Library (DSL), who informed the students about the literary sessions to be held at the venue. Of the 12 sessions some of the memorable ones were - ‘History’s Girls: Things Fall Apart’ ; ‘Writers Without Borders’, ‘Poet As Philosopher: Kabir and the Mystics’, ‘Insurgency and the Artist’ , ‘Women, Poetry and Other Dangerous Things’, and ‘ How Words Survive’ by Ranjit Hoskote. The highlight of the Literature vertical of the festival was the ‘Nissim Ezekiel Poetry Crawl: A 100th Birth Anniversary Retrospective’ hosted by Saranya Subramanian that looked at his poetry vis-a-vis the urban landscapes around the fort area.
