The Goa Logistic and Warehousing Policy 2023 was on Wednesday granted approval by the Pramod Sawant cabinet which envisions earmarking 20 per-cent of the land of the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) for logistic purposes.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the policy was approved and it aims to boost logistics as a crucial business activity which could be a catalyst for raising Goa's economic profile.
Sawant said, 20 per-cent of of the land in IDC estates has been allocated for logistic purposes and that these operations can be taken up under the 'Gati Shakti Plan'.
Efforts to give the logistics industry a boost fell short of achieving the desired results but with the commissioning of the first phase of the Mopa airport, there is renewed interest.
Industry leaders believe that exports, particularly from the established pharma sector, will benefit immensely if routed through Mopa instead of the currently preferred Mumbai airport. It could be of immense benefit to the pharma sector both in terms of logistics as well as costs.
Goa has potential to emerge as a strategic and multi-modal logistics hub to serve Western India as it will now have adequate infrastructure for onward transportation of goods via sea, rail, road and air routes.
Meanwhile, in other decisions the cabinet has approved a 40-year lease on a 3,410 square meter parcel of land at Tuem-Pernem in favour of Atmavishwas Society, Mandrem to run a school for differently abled. The outstanding rent arrears of over Rs 40 lakh due since January 2014 have also been waived off.
The Cabinet also approved the transfer of government land in eight Goan villages for the setting up of 4G mobile towers.
