Goencho Avaaz State Convenor Captain Viriato Fernandes is set to join the Congress party and is likely to contest from Dabolim constituency, where he would face Transport Minister and sitting MLA Mauvin Godinho and Premanand Nanoskar.
Capt Fernandes said he would be inducted into the Congress party by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at the Chicalim sports ground on Friday at 7 pm.
Speaking to reporters, Capt Fernandes said he had received several requests from people who wanted the Goencho Avaaz to join hands with the Congress to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Under his leadership, Goencho Avaaz had highlighted various issues concerning Goa.
In July, Goencho Avaaz had decided to contest assembly elections and had even declared candidates for Tivim and Calangute constituencies.
In November, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar had publicly appealed to Capt. Fernandes to join the Congress and contest the ensuing assembly elections from Dabolim constituency.
The Dabolim Congress Block Committee members had also supported Capt. Fernandes and had moved a resolution in support of his entry into the Congress.
