The Pramod Sawant government finally took a significant step forward on Tuesday on its often stated intention of no-man’s land (land whose dead owners’ heirs are not traceable or do not exist) being taken over by the State.

Revenue Minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate introduced the The Goa Escheats, Forfeiture and Bona Vacantia Bill, 2024 in the Goa legislative assembly on Tuesday.

The bill which will become law following its expected passage in the current session and subsequent Governor’s assent and notification, provides for the government to take over such parcels of land which are lying unclaimed either because there are no heirs or they are untraceable.

It was a proposal mooted by Sawant after a number of fraudulent land deals surfaced which came to be known as the ‘Land Grab Scam’.
