Sao Tome and Fontainhas residents meet CCP Mayor; call for streamlining of tourism

Panaji: Residents of Sao Tome and Fontainhas today called on CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate to demand streamlining of tourism-related activities within their areas.

The locals urged the City Municipal corporation to establish visiting hours for tourists and ensure that their activities respect local sentiments. They also demanded the cancellation of Festa do Povo.

In their series of demands, they also pressed for a centralized parking solution for tourist vehicles and other non-resident vehicles, apart from highlighting the need for clearer signages to help direct tourists effectively.

Sanitation was also a significant concern, as tourists currently have limited access to facilities. "We suggested that the upcoming Smart City project across the Rua De Ourem Creek include public restrooms for tourists. "This would provide necessary amenities for visitors and reduce pressure on the area," they proposed.

Concerns about street vendors and anti-social elements loitering in the area were raised as well.

CPP Mayor Rohit Monserrate responded to the residents' concerns and assured to take onboard all the concerned departments to ensure that residents can interact with them and thereby provide solutions to their issues.

He acknowledged the rise in tourism due to social media but emphasized the need for basic decency from visitors.

"Tourists must understand that they are in a residential area. They should not behave as if it is a theme park. We are committed to finding a balance that respects both tourism and the residents' quality of life," the Mayor said.

The Mayor recognized the festival's cancellation as a significant step, stating, "If the residents do not wish to have the festival, then we will respect that. Their comfort and opinions matter."

Regarding traffic and parking, he noted, "A centralized parking solution is necessary. We need to ensure that both residents and businesses can thrive without compromising the area’s charm."
