PANAJI: While the recent amendments to the Wakf Board Act may not affect original Goans or Muslims living in the State for generations, the rising migration into Goa could potentially lead to challenges in the future, said BJP National General Secretary and MP Radhamohandas Agarwal.
“There is no immediate concern for Goans or long-standing Muslim residents. However, with growing migration, we cannot rule out the emergence of issues. That is why awareness of the new amendments is crucial,” he said during a press conference at the BJP office in Panaji today.
Taking a proactive approach, the BJP has announced the formation of dedicated teams comprising district presidents and mandal karyakartas. These teams will conduct door-to-door outreach among the Muslim community in Goa to educate them on the recent changes to the Wakf Act. “If we are unable to reach every home, we will place advertisements in newspapers to present the truth of the amendments to the public,” Agarwal added.
He emphasized that although no crimes or legal issues have arisen so far, awareness remains the key to maintaining peace and harmony. “Knowing the law is the best way to avoid future conflicts. Goa is an example of education, human development, and social balance. To safeguard this unique character, every citizen must be informed about their rights,” he said.
Highlighting Goa’s longstanding tradition of the Uniform Civil Code and its educated populace, Agarwal remarked, “Goa has followed a Uniform Civil Code since Portuguese times. It’s part of the State’s culture. But as the population grows and changes due to inflow from other States, we must be prepared to address new situations with knowledge and unity.”
