The ongoing underground cabling work has caused significant inconvenience to Curtorim residents, as roads are being dug up for cable laying.

At Curtorim, Aam Aadmi Party leader Engr. Roque Mascarenhas told the media that despite the long wait and repeated complaints, the authorities have failed to address the issues arising from the uneven backfilling work and dusty conditions on the roads. “This has significantly impacted the daily lives of the residents, with the hazardous road conditions becoming a cause of grave concern,” he said.

Mascarenhas said while patchwork repairs had commenced after the monsoons, the authorities have inexplicably halted all further work. “This abandonment has left the roads in a deplorable state, with large stretches remaining uneven and unsafe for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Complaints and petitions submitted to the PWD Road authorities by residents have yielded no response, highlighting the lack of accountability and urgency from the concerned departments,” he said.

He added: “The residents are now seeking wider attention to this matter, urging the authorities to take immediate action to complete the pending road restoration work. Proper backfilling and road resurfacing must be prioritised to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.”

Mascarenhas further pointed out that the lack of action on the part of the authorities reflects poorly on the governance of basic infrastructure in the area. “We have come to the media in order to call the immediate intervention to address this pressing issue. The residents of Curtorim deserve better infrastructure and roads that are safe and conducive to daily life,” he added.

Residents question lack of water spraying on roads to control dust

MARGAO: With the residents of staying along the Cuncolim Industrial Estate road from the Savorcotto Bridge subjected to dust pollution due to the ongoing underground cabling work, Cuncolim Municipal councillor Laximan Naik has wondered why the contractors are not spraying water along the road to keep the dust at bay.

The former Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson has demanded to know why the PWD and the Electricity Department have not taken precautionary measures while tendering and allotting works. “The underground cabling work on the road from the Sanvorcotto Bridge to the Cuncolim Industrial Estate has led to tremendous dust pollution on the entire stretch of the one km road. People cannot breathe freely while commuting and vision becomes blurred,” he said.

He added: “The work is going for the last one month. The dust enters houses and shops, Chapels and other establishments. The government department should have arranged spraying water on the road to prevent high flying dust. Public ask who is responsible for creating the mess. If the work is allotted to 10 contractors, why have they not taken cognisance of the sufferings of the people,” he demanded to know.
