Cronyism in Qatar Airways’ shift from Dabolim to Mopa Airport: South Goa MP

After transporting thousands of passengers between Doha and Dabolim since 2009, Qatar Airways has officially shifted all operations to the new Manohar International Airport at Mopa. The shift to Manohar International Airport has sparked concerns among local leaders and residents.

South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes has voiced strong opinions on the matter, suggesting potential underlying motives. "There have been attempts by the government to close down Dabolim Airport while falsely assuring its continuity," Fernandes stated. "Their own minister mentioned that airline companies had contacted them to shift to Mopa. It is becoming evident that GMR is exerting pressure. If this continues, there will be no more flights at Dabolim. Many people depend on this airport."

Fernandes also noted the timing of the decision, coming shortly after Prime Minister Modi's visit to Qatar. He questioned whether there is a connection, suggesting that "cronies who have purchased properties around Mopa are benefiting," and expressed concerns about the impact on the culture of Pernem. "I will raise this question in Parliament," Fernandes asserted.
