Residents of Dhangar Wada on Thursday morning staged a rally to oppose the private university which is being planned on Comunidade land in Tivim.

Residents, including women and children from the Dhangar community participated in the rally, which also received the support of members of the Goyche Fudle Pilge Khatir (GFPK). Stating that land for the proposed private university at Tivim had been preserved by their forefathers, members of Dhangar community insisted that they do not want any private university on this land.

“We do not want any university on Comunidade land. The land should be reserved for the construction of our houses. We don't need a private university in Goa, as Goa University has a lot of scope and potential,” said Pandurang Patil, Vice President of Dhangar Samaj.

GFPK President Jacques Mascarenhas said that his organisation commends the people of Tivim for coming out in large numbers on October 20 to oppose the university project in their village.

“We had contacted the Administrator of Comunidades in September requesting details of the contract and Comunidade resolution regarding the private university. But we were advised to contact the Tivim Comunidad. But there was no reply from Comunidade. But through information obtained from RTI, we have come to know that as per the agreement, the private university can mortgage the land to a bank,” said Mascarenhas.

Amancio Fernandes said the land is undeveloped and partly suitable for horticulture. “Since the canal of Tilari dam passes by, the land can be used for agriculture,” said Fernandes.
