District Road Safety Committee to audit 65 black spots, accident prone zones

The North Goa District Road Safety Committee on Tuesday discussed the issue of rectification of 65 black spots and accident-prone zones and decided to conduct an audit on work to be undertaken at each spot in the first week of April.

This was decided at a meeting chaired by Additional Collector I (North) Gopal Parsekar and attended by Prabodh Shirvoikar (DySp Traffic-North), B A Sawant (Additional Director of Transport-North), Dr Rupa Naik (CMO NCDC DHS), Roland Martins (Co-ordinator GOACAN), Sanjay L Ghate (General Manager KTCL), Kavita M Naik Gaunkar (Dy Education Officer) and representatives of Excise, DMA, Directorate of Panchayats and PWD.

In view of the proposed review by the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee, the North Goa District Safety Committee deliberated on various issues that required a status update and compliance.

The meeting decided that painting of speed breakers in Tiswadi Taluka has to be reviewed, while in the matter of hoardings endangering road safety, all deputy collectors in North Goa will be requested to submit a Taluka-wise list.

Village panchayats and municipal councils situated along the highways will be listed for an intervention to tackle stray cattle and stray dogs that endanger road safety by taking the assistance of AHVS and Mission Rabies.

On providing assistance to victims of road accidents during the Golden Hour, it was decided that training programs for volunteers will be organised by DHS and EMRI in collaboration with Self Help Groups and Consumer Forums in the next 6 months.

The meeting also decided to short list those buses that need modification in the footboard ground clearance and doorway steps while KTCL will finalise the bus route number for major shuttle services and introduce on a trial basis a shuttle service from the bus stand to railway station in keeping with the focus on last mile connectivity.

On the issue of ISI marked helmets, it was decided to monitor various brands available in Goa and their sale as per MRP decided by the respective manufacturers, to curb overcharging of consumers.

It was also decided to inform all village panchayats and municipal councils in the jurisdiction of the various Traffic Police Cells in North Goa, to speed up the submission of proposals on road safety and traffic management.

It was also decided to brief chief officers of all municipal councils in North Goa on the importance of the formation and training of members of their respective road safety and traffic management committees.

The drive to identify abandoned vehicles in the jurisdiction of all municipal councils will also be intensified in the next three months.
