PANAJI: In a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, the Goa Police have seized 4.32 kg of high-grade cocaine worth Rs 43.20 crore, the biggest drug seizure in the state’s history. The consignment, concealed in chocolate and coffee packets, was intercepted during a delivery attempt on Monday.
Calling it a “very important and massive drug bust,” Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rahul Gupta said the operation was the result of coordinated efforts by multiple units, including the Crime Branch, Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC), and District Police.
“We received inputs about a group attempting to deliver a drug consignment. On apprehending them, we recovered packets of white powder hidden inside chocolate and coffee packaging. On-the-spot testing confirmed it was cocaine,” Gupta said.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case: Nebu Vincent, Reshma Wadekar, and her husband, Mangesh Wadekar. Police believe Reshma was responsible for sourcing the consignment, while Vincent and Mangesh were involved in its distribution.
A total of 32 packets were recovered: 14 pink, 14 green, and 4 coffee packets. SP Gupta said the packaging was “sophisticated and carefully designed,” indicating a possible international link.
“Reshma had recently travelled abroad, and we are investigating if the drugs were brought in from outside India,” he added.
Initial background checks revealed that the Wadekar couple has a criminal past. Reshma was previously arrested in a prostitution case, while Mangesh faces a rape charge. Nebu Vincent has no prior record and may have been used as a courier.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant praised the police for the operation, calling it a testament to the state’s proactive stance against narcotics.
“This seizure reflects our government’s unwavering commitment, sharp vigilance, and the professional excellence of the Goa Police in battling drug trafficking,” Sawant said.
Just weeks earlier, the Crime Branch had busted a hydroponic weed racket worth Rs 11.67 crore, then the biggest drug seizure in the state. Monday’s operation has now eclipsed that record.
Authorities are now planning a house search at the Wadekar residence and continue their investigations into the broader drug supply network. While there is no indication that the Wadekar couple's two sons are involved, authorities are not ruling out further connections.
