The hunt for a new vice-chancellor for Goa University progressed a further step on Monday with the three-member Search Committee reportedly short-listing five names from a pool of 25 they had earlier shortlisted from 260 applicants who had applied online.
The five names, according to Raj Bhavan sources, have been received in a sealed envelope by the office of the Governor, P S Sreedharan Pillai, who is the University's Chancellor and will take a call on who the next Vice-Chancellor will be.
Currently Prof Malapati K Janarthanam, is officiating as Vice Chancellor on an acting basis ever since the outgoing VC Varun Sahni ended his term on August 18.
The term of the Goa University's vice-chancellor is for five years.
Nearly 260 academics from across the country had applied for the VC's post and the three member search committee formed by Pillai and comprising CSIR director general Dr Shekar Mande, former NCERT director Jagmohan Singh Rajput and Dr Satish Reddy of DRDO, had conducted the exercise of short-listing 25 candidates.
The shortlisted candidates were then interviewed in the online mode by the search committee on August 25.
Pillai has the option of rejecting all five names and asking the search committee to repeat the exercise of identifying more candidates.
