After the closure order, the Goa State Pollution Board (GSPCB) revoked suspensions of a fish meal plant and three other fish processing units at Cuncolim Industrial Estate today.

While these establishments have been allowed to resume operations, the authorities have however imposed fines.

Environment Minister Alexio Sequeira stated that fish meal and fish processing units have been instructed to install flow meters to monitor their water consumption and discharge. This, he said, will tackle concerns over excessive water usage.

Sequeira stated that while some units claim the water is being used for gardening, the volume of water generated reportedly exceeds what is required for such purposes. To ensure proper monitoring, the flow meters will be connected to the GSPCB, allowing officials to track water intake, treatment and discharge remotely.

"As of now, no such mechanism is in place, but within the next 10-15 days, necessary technology will be installed. We are committed to resolving this issue and ensuring there are no further complaints," he assured.

The GSPCB has scheduled a follow-up meeting next Friday.
