In an effort to uphold discipline and maintain the dignity of the uniform, the Goa Police have issued an order prohibiting personnel from participating in public stage and street performances during community policing initiatives while in uniform. The directive, issued by Superintendent of Police (Training) Sucheta Dessai on Thursday, also restricts uniformed officers from engaging in singing and dancing.

The order stated that while police personnel should refrain from direct participation in performances, they may act as facilitators.

“Police personnel should avoid stage and street performance to maintain the decorum of the police uniform. Instead of direct participation, police personnel could stop and encourage performance by civil society. Police stations could encourage students to perform in cultural events and sporting activities based on relevant issues,” reads the order.

The police stations have also been encouraged to involve students in cultural and sporting events on relevant social issues. The uniformed personnel are permitted to accompany groups of children and students on educational tours, such as Bharat Darshan, as part of civic action programs to enhance public outreach and improve the police image.

“Police personnel, when in uniform, are not only representing themselves but also the institution and the public they serve,” it added.

The directive further directs that police officers ensure that scripts and storylines of public performances align with legal regulations and do not misrepresent police functioning.

“Police officers should refrain from participating in social engagements involving dancing and singing,” it said, reinforcing restrictions on social engagements.
