Waste to Wealth at Revival: Celebrating sustainability

Revival 2020, a festival that celebrates stories of sustainable coexistence, will be conducted from November 6 to 8 from 4 pm to 10 pm at the Garcia De Orta Garden in Panaji jointly by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and Sensible Earth.

The festival will celebrate all that is local, sustainable and organic, while being an opportunity to economically support local businesses, professionals, communities, artists, musicians that have been impacted by the lockdown.

The festival will include waste walks, music jams, cycling tours, DIY workshops, other curated walks, musical performances, a repair workshop for bicycles, shoes, clothes, home chefs, organic produce, and stalls selling up cycled, recycled, sustainable products.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the display of 16-way segregation that the city has decided to implement in housing societies and commercial complexes within the city jurisdiction. The display will help people understand the various categories and the need to do it.

The waste exchange programme is organized as part of the HDFC-UNDP funded Dry Waste Management Programme operated in Panaji in association with the CCP. The programme is jointly implemented on ground by the team of 21 Century Polymers and Mineral Foundation of Goa.

Five categories of waste will be exchanged for money to emphasise the fact that waste has value when segregated. These categories are: PET bottles (Rs 10 per kg), Hard Plastic (Rs 8 per kg), Cardboard (Rs 4 per kg), Aluminium/Metal Cans (Rs 0.5 per can) and Mixed metal (Rs 5 per kg).

Further, a Plastic Dovor, Mask Vhor, a plastic exchange programme will be setup alongside the money exchange programme.

Any person who deposits the following categories of plastic waste at the counter will be provided with a cloth mask stitched by one of the waste pickers working at the Material Recovery Facility in St Inez. These plastic waste are PET bottles (10 pieces), Shiny Chips/biscuit packets (20 pieces), Used toothbrush/Straws (20 pieces), Medium-Large plastic bags (15 pieces) and Mixed plastic (10 pieces).

Every person depositing waste at the counters will receive a coupon to be part of the Waste Tour of the City on Saturday.

For those who cannot make it to the Waste Tour, the coupon will remain valid for a few more days and will be allowed to visit the Material Recovery Facility in St Inez at a predetermined time.
