A thief managed to steal a scooter from the basement of a housing colony which is a gated complex and even has security, but little did he realise that it would belong to the wife of former MLA Carlos Almeida.

Worse still, the thief used the stolen bike to move around the city and its suburbs for a few days till he was caught by the Vasco police.

Vasco police arrested Vinayak Rane (21) of Sada-Vasco on charges of stealing the scooter of Jennifer Almeida, wife of former Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida.

According to sources in Vasco police station, Jennifer’s scooter was stolen sometime between June 30 and July 1 from the basement of a housing colony which is a gated complex and also has security personnel.

"Former Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida’s son filed a complaint in this regards with the Vasco police station on Monday,” said a source.

During the patrolling duties on Wednesday, Vasco police team consisting of Purshottam Naik and Santosh Bhatkar noticed a person roaming on a scooter near the MPT ground at Baina.

“The police suspected the bike to be the same stolen bike but the accused had been riding it without both the number plates. The Vasco police staff then intercepted the accused, Vinayak Rane, a habitual offender, and took the bike to the Vasco police station.”

“The police then verified the chassis number of the bike and realised that it was the same bike that was stolen from the premises of Carlos Almeida. The Vasco police arrested the accused and he was produced before the JMFC on Wednesday, where he was remanded to 15 days in judicial custody," said the source.
