The sports complex at Socorro was proposed to provide various sporting facilities for residents of Porvorim and surrounding areas.

Ten years later, the complex is yet to be completed and hopes have now been revived with the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) in the process of getting the remaining work completed.

The foundation stone for this project was laid on February 25, 2013 and the estimated cost of this project then was Rs 34.5 crore. Construction work began in 2014 and this project was expected to be completed by April 30, 2015. The sports complex is being constructed by GSIDC.

When contacted, Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the GSIDC initially had some issues with the contractor but the same were sorted out and the work started in full swing.

“However later, the contractor involved in the work at this sports complex expired, on account of which the work suffered a setback. The GSIDC recently invited fresh tenders on February 23 from contractors to complete the remaining work, the estimated cost of which is Rs 11.33 crore. The last date for the receipt of the tenders is March 10 and tenders will be opened on March 14,” said Khaunte.

“Once this tender process is finalised and the work order to the new contractor is issued, the remaining work of the sports complex will start. The major work of the sports complex has been completed.”

“Once this project is completed, residents of Socorro as well as residents of entire Porvorim constituency and nearby villages will get swimming pool and other facilities such as badminton courts, table tennis courts, squash courts, basketball court, football ground, gymnasium, multipurpose hall, library, changing rooms, lockers and kids play area,” he added.
