16th Finance Commission arrives in Goa; State seeks Rs 28,000 cr for development projects

PANAJI: The 16th Finance Commission, led by Dr. Arvind Panagariya, arrived in Goa today for a two-day visit. The Commission, which also includes members Ajay Narayan Jha and Manoj Panda, was welcomed by Protocol Minister Mauvin Godinho.

The Goa government is seeking Rs 28,000 crore for various developmental projects during the visit. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant chaired a review meeting ahead of the presentation to the Commission, which will focus on the state’s financial needs, specific project proposals, and funding for disaster management.

Among the proposed allocations are funds for tourism, education, health, power, green energy, public works, and water resources, as well as for disaster management, waste management, and climate change action.

The Commission will meet with cabinet ministers, senior officials, and local representatives during its visit, and it will also visit various sites to review the government's progress on development projects. The Finance Commission is tasked with recommending a fiscal framework for the five-year period starting April 1, 2026, with its report due by October 31, 2025
