PANAJI: The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman is set to host the 18th Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St. Francis Xavier from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025. This solemn event, which draws thousands of faithful from around the world, will open with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. on November 21, followed by a procession featuring chosen representatives. Pilgrims are encouraged to maintain silence, a spirit of prayer, and to avoid unnecessary photography during the procession.
Following the opening ceremony, veneration of the relics will be available daily from November 22 until January 4, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., though no prior booking is required. The Exposition will close on January 5 with another procession and Mass, but without veneration on that day.
During the Exposition, special provisions have been made for the sick and disabled, with a counter set up at the gate in front of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. Wheelchair access is available only to those with a certification from a parish priest, doctor, or a PWD certificate, which can be presented at the counter from November 22 onwards. However, this facility is restricted to disabled individuals, with senior citizens encouraged to join the regular queues, which are considered part of the pilgrimage experience. The nearby Bakhiya Property Parking Area will serve as an easy access for those needing the wheelchair facility.
Masses will be held daily throughout the Exposition, with eight Masses scheduled between 6 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. daily. Faithful from outside Goa may book the 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. time slots by contacting the Basilica Rector. Novena days, feast days, weekends, and holidays are expected to be particularly crowded, and pilgrims are advised to plan visits accordingly.
Guidelines have also been issued to ensure a smooth and respectful experience. Modest dress is expected, and pilgrims should refrain from carrying large bags or valuable items into the veneration area, as bags will not be allowed. Inside the Cathedral, photography is strictly prohibited, and mobile phones should be turned off during Mass and veneration. Parking is restricted to designated areas, and visitors are urged not to obstruct traffic or park on roadsides. Additionally, water bottles and liquids will not be permitted inside the veneration area.
For pilgrims in need of accommodation, the Archdiocese website (www.archgoadaman.com) provides booking details, though reservations cannot be made over the phone. Additional information about the Exposition is also available through the Catholic Connect app. For more specific queries, Fr. Henry Falcão, Convenor of the Exposition Committee, encourages the faithful to consult the Archdiocese’s resources.
