About 100 riders without helmets may have been anxious after being stopped by Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho and the Vasco Traffic Police Cell on Wednesday, but the situation took an unexpected twist when these riders were gifted free helmets.

In a push to promote the use of safety gear among motorists, Godinho not only distributed 100 free helmets to people in Dabolim constituency but stated that around 1,000 free helmets will be distributed across Goa through the transport department.

The minister distributed the 100 free helmets in Dabolim constituency during the 13th Road Safety Week programme, in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, Chicalim Dy Sarpanch Aishwarya Korgaonkar, Vasco Traffic PI Shailesh Narvekar and others.

Speaking to reporters, Godinho said the gesture to offer free helmets was aimed at promoting safety gear among motorists, especially in light of rising road accidents in the State.

“When I interacted with riders, some said their helmets had been spoilt or damaged or some did not have money to buy new helmets. However, the importance of helmet use is a simple yet crucial step in preventing serious injuries, and wearing a helmet can save precious lives,” said Godinho.

“This means that we may have to become practical and realise their needs and offer them helmets. This free distribution of helmets is a small initiative to encourage people to prioritise their safety while on the road.”

Godinho said 100 free helmets had been distributed to people in Dabolim constituency and around 1,000 free helmets would be distributed across the State through the transport department.

“As of now, stressing on helmets for pillion riders as well will be too much to ask in one go. We will make it happen but in a phased manner,” said Godinho.

“As minister, I am trying to engage with citizens and urge them to follow traffic regulations and avoid the use of mobile phones while driving. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we have to make a collective effort to keep our roads safe.”
