PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral on Monday threw open the first phase of a new four-lane bridge at Oddar-Curchorem.

According to Cabral, the bridge has been built by using the latest technology by installing prefabricated span within a period of 15 months and the second phase most probably will be completed by December this year.

“The old bridge was in very poor condition and there was fear among the public that it may collapse at any time as it was on the main road and used by commuters regularly,” said Cabral.

“Therefore, on request from public, the project was taken and completed in a time-bound manner by spending Rs 20 crore. The entire stretch of road from Curchorem to Assolda bridge will be converted into a four-lane soon.”

Commenting on the delay in opening the new building of the Up-Graded Primary Health Centre, Cabral said he would inaugurate it only when the kidney dialysis facilities are in place.

“I want to complete it in all respects to give maximum facilities, not only to people from Curchorem but surrounding areas too,” informd Cabral.

Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) General Manager Dilip Joshi said the new bridge is built without pillars in between and the second phase consisting of another two lanes is expected to be completed in December.

“So possibly, it could be inaugurated officially on December 19,” said Joshi.

Besides public from Curchorem, people from nearby areas of Oddar, Xelvona and Assolda will also benefit from this new bridge as they have to frequently commute to Curchorem for their essential marketing and other works.

Others present on the occasion included CCMC Vice-Chairperson Rucha Vasta, ZP member Siddharth Gauns Dessai, councillors, panch members and GSIDC officials.
