In a tragic incident, two labourers from Jharkhand are feared drowned in the Zuari river on Tuesday evening after a portion of the old Portuguese-era Borim bridge collapsed.
While two of the labourers managed to swim ashore, the other two went missing after they landed in the water.
Maina Curtorim Police station in-charge, PI Mohan Gawde informed that four labourers were engaged in the work of dismantling the old Borim bridge when the incident occurred.
The contractor Nitin Shirodkar told the media at the site that the four labourers were on the job to erect barricades on the bridge to stop people from coming on the dilapidated bride.
“While three workers were on one side, the V-shaped portion of the bridge suddenly came down while the workers were erecting the barricades. The workers were on the bridge carrying out the work, but the portion of the bridge just collapsed within 10 minutes,” he said.
Shirodkar pointed out that two managed to swim ashore, but the other two are still missing.
After receiving the information at around 5.30 pm, the Maina Curtorim police immediately pressed into service rescue teams, including divers, to trace the missing labourers.
