Two female constables, Taniksha Chauhan and Priti Chauhan, who were arrested on charges of abetment to suicide in the case of constable Prathamesh Gawde, allegedly attempted suicide on Thursday morning in Colvale jail.
The incident occurred at around 11 am when the two climbed onto a water tank on the roof of the women’s cell block and jumped, sustaining minor injuries.
According to sources, the accused were taken out of the women’s cell as part of their daily morning routine.
From the cell gate, they climbed onto the three-metre-high water tank on the roof and, holding hands, jumped together.
Due to the limited height of the tank, both sustained only slight injuries and were immediately transported to the North Goa District Hospital for treatment. After receiving medical care, they were discharged and returned to the jail.
Both are reportedly in stable condition.
The constables, who are cousins, were on probation and serving at the Agassaim police station before their arrest.
Following the incident, they were suspended by the police department pending an inquiry into the matter.
While being treated at the hospital, one of the women spoke briefly to journalists, asserting their innocence.
“We are innocent. An attempt has been made to involve us in an internal matter for no reason,” she said.
The case against the two women stems from the suicide of Police Constable Prathamesh Gawde, who ended his life by jumping off the Zuari bridge.
Gawde alleged that Taniksha and Priti Chauhan had incited him to take the drastic step.
The incident has led to a wider investigation, with both women facing scrutiny as legal proceedings continue.
