CANACONA
In a strong turnout for the fifth cancer screening camp in Goa, over 285 individuals attended the event in Canacona recently, resulting in the detection of 21 suspected cancer cases.
A joint team of doctors and medical staff from Goa Medical College, Goa Dental College & Hospital, IME, and the Directorate of Health Services screened the participants. Among the findings were one recurrent oral cancer case and 15 cases with different oral lesions referred by the dental team. Additionally, six suspected breast cancer cases were identified.
The camp screened 108 women for breast cancer, with six referrals for further analysis. Of the 66 patients screened for oral cancer (32 males and 34 females), one case of right buccal mucosa cancer (previously treated) was found, along with five premalignant lesions, including oral submucous fibrosis and leukoplakia. Other lesions detected included mucocele, lymphadenopathy, lichen planus, aphthous ulcer, frictional keratosis, and traumatic fibroma, with treatment provided for 11 cases.
The emergence of 21 new cancer cases has raised concerns about the growing health issue in Canacona, particularly following recent renal failure incidents. The camp, organised by the Government of Goa and local health authorities, was inaugurated by Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, attracting a significant local response.
