238 schools in Goa have only one teacher: Data

In Goa, 16 per cent of the schools were run by single teachers, having total student enrolment of 3,142 in the year 2023-24.

According to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2023-24 report released by the Department of School Education & Literacy, there are 16 teachers appointed in four schools that have got zero enrolment. The number has remained stagnant as against 2022-23.

There are 42.9 per cent schools with 50 or less students while only 11 per cent schools have more than 500 students.

The data shows that of the total 1,487 schools, there are 238 schools with a single teacher. The number is up by one additional teacher as compared to 2022-23, wherein there were 237 schools, having 3,138 students, with a single teacher.

The pupil teacher ratio (PTR) at schools in Goa has remained best within the national average at primary, upper primary, elementary, secondary as well as higher secondary level.

As per the report, PTR at the primary level remained at one teacher per 25 students, as compared to the national average of one teacher per 28 students. At upper primary, Goa has one teacher for every 14 students as against national average of 1:24 while at secondary level, the ratio is 8:1 (national average of 19:1) and 16:1 (27:1) at higher secondary level.

The data shows that average teachers per school are 10 while average enrolments per school stood at 205 pupils.

The dropout rate also stood at 0.8 per cent in primary level, 1.1 per cent at upper primary level and 8.07 per cent at secondary level. What is interesting to note is that a larger number of boys (10 per cent) are dropping out of the school at secondary level as compared to girls (5 per cent).

Further, of the 789 government schools in Goa, only 158 i.e. 20 per cent have functional computer facilities for pedagogical purposes. Of the total 1487 schools in Goa 816 i.e. 54.9 per cent have such facilities that is 20% government schools , 94.6 per cent in government aided schools and 92.9  per cent in private aided schools.

Also, out of the total 1,487 schools in Goa, merely 9 per cent that is 131 schools, have CWSN (Child With Special Needs) friendly toilets. In all 63 per cent schools have ramps and 57 per cent are equipped with ramps and handrails. Total 4,341 children with special needs (CWSN) are enrolled in the schools.

Data also revealed that 1353 schools have playgrounds, 32 have digital library, 1477 have functional girls toilets and 1476 have functional boys toilets.
