2 cars, scooter involved in mishap along Canacona bypass
CANACONA
Three members of a family were killed while two were critically injured and five others sustained injuries in a major road mishap involving two cars and a scooter at the Canacona bypass on Wednesday evening.
The mishap took place as a Karwar-bound car hit the road divider on reaching the Rajbhag-Tarir junction and toppled on the other side of the bypass, crashing onto an oncoming car. At that moment, scooter proceeding from Loliem towards Canacona hit one car and then rammed into a crash-barrier.
A man and woman from the Karwar-bound car died on the spot, while another man from the same car succumbed on the way to the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC). The car driver, who was trapped inside the seat, was pulled out by locals.
Four members of the Karwar-bound car, two occupants of the other car and one scooter rider were also injured in the mishap.
In all, seven injured persons were rushed to the CHC and were later shifted to the South District Hospital in Margao.
The deceased were later identified as Ulhas Nagekar (64), his wife Veena (60) and their son, Harish (35), while the injured have been identified as Saivi Harish Nagekar (2), Harshita Harish Nagekar (26), Samiksha Nagekar (40), Sai Nagekar (13), Sukshata Kankonkar (31) and two other unidentified persons.
The family travelling towards Karwar were natives of Majali-Karwar and were staying in Vasco. They were going to visit the Satteri Devi Temple, which is open for only seven days in a year, when the accident took place.
