Panic over a 4-day lockdown sent people rushing to the weekly Bicholim market on Wednesday and 400 people were fined for not wearing masks or improper use of face masks.

According to reports, people panicked on hearing the news of a 4-day lockdown from Thursday evening to Monday morning and rushed to the weekly Bicholim market on Wednesday to buy their provisions and supplies.

The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) had announced strict measures at the weekly market.

BMC Chairperson Kundan Falari said the BMC fined 400 people for not wearing masks, while the police also fined some for wearing masks below their noses and walking around the market.

Falari has appealed to people to strictly follow rules and to avoid moving around unnecessarily.

Meanwhile, the Bicholim deputy collector also noticed a large crowd at the market on Wednesday and warned of action against those violating SOPs and health protocols.

Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar has also appealed to people to take care of their health and not move in public place for no reason.
