Barely days after Abhida Barretto of Canacona topped Goa at the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) with a percentile of 99.93 and an All-India Rank of 905, the taluka was abuzz with news that five of the 30 youth selected under the flagship Goa Scholar Scheme for 2019-20 hail from Canacona.
In fact, four of them hail from Loliem village and one hails from Galgibaga-Poinguinim village, Canacona’s two southernmost border villages in the State.
The five young meritorious and outstanding scholars selected for the Goa Scholar Scheme to pursue further studies at reputed education institutions in India and abroad are Sanjana Viraj Paraz of Galgibag-Poinguinim (Master of Science in Structural Engineering, Stanford University, USA), Shubham Jaiprakash Prabhudesai of Loliem (Post Graduate Diploma in Management, Goa Institute of Management), Gargi Gopalkrishna Prabhugaonkar of Mashem-Agas, Loliem (Post Graduate in Computer Software Engineering, California State University, USA), Gandha Damodar Bhat of Agas-Loliem (Post Graduate Diploma in Management, Goa Institute of Management) and Pratish Pradeep Prabhudesai of Agas-Loliem (Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) at Goa Institute of Management).
The 30 budding talents were selected as Goa Scholars under the Manohar Parrikar Goa Scholar Scheme 2018 for the academic year 2019-20. The Goa Scholar Scheme is a flagship scheme of the State government being implemented through the Directorate of Higher Education.
The objective of the scheme has been to identify and encourage young meritorious and outstanding scholars from Goa to pursue their post-graduate and doctoral studies at reputed universities and higher education institutions both in India and abroad.
Canacona's talent taking centre stage: MLA

Pleased that five of the 30 youth selected under the flagship Goa Scholar Scheme for 2019-20 hail from Canacona, Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes has said Canacona's talent is slowly but definitely taking centre stage in the State and across the nation.
Fernandes congratulated all five Goa Scholars hailing from Canacona and wished them all success in their future endeavours. He also congratulated the families of these five scholars.
“Canacona's talent is slowly but definitely taking centre stage not only in the State but in the nation as a whole,” said Fernandes.
Meanwhile, Fernandes visited Abhida Barretto at her residence in Mastimoll-Canacona and felicitated her for topping Goa at the NEET examinations.
Fernandes lauded Abhida’s desire to serve the Armed Forces by pursuing her further studies in medicine.
“Abhida’s patriotism for our country is a shining example for the youth,” said Fernandes.
CMC councillor Shubham Komarpant, Canacona BJP Block President Nandeep Bhagat and Block General Secretary Damu Komarpant also accompanied Fernandes during his visit to the Barretto residence.
