PANAJI: State's life-saving agency Drishti Marine has announced demarcating 65 designated swim zones (SZs) across Goa’s beaches as part of a safety initiative.
With 40 already in place across 10 beaches including Calangute, Baga, Arambol and Colva, the number will now exceed 100 by peak season.
“The initiative is aimed at ensuring safer swimming experiences for beachgoers by clearly marking areas for swimming, keeping them separate from water sports activities, and facilitating better monitoring,” said Navin Awasthi, CEO of Drishti Marine.
Swim zones have been set up at Arambol, Morjim, Baga, Calangute, Miramar, Baina, Bogmalo, Colva, Baga-2, and Ashvem. Each zone features partition moorings for clear demarcation, with proper signage to guide visitors. The designated areas are further divided into three sections—one for families, another for men, and an exclusive space for women.
“The introduction of a dedicated women’s swim zone is an important step in ensuring comfort and safety for women on Goa’s beaches,” Awasthi said. “Everyone should have a safe and enjoyable time when stepping into the water.”
As part of additional safety measures, public announcement systems have been installed at Miramar, Bogmalo, Colva, and Baga beaches to provide real-time alerts and safety warnings. Water sports activities are strictly prohibited within these zones to minimize risks. “During rough sea conditions, red flags will be put up to indicate that swimming is not allowed,” Awasthi added.
Plans are in place to introduce 25 more swim zones along other beaches, with the total number exceeding 100 during peak season.
