The Cyber Crime Cell blocked 69 websites, nine social media accounts and links and 121 mobile numbers in the entire month of January 2025. In the last four months since October 2024, a total of 155 websites, 28 social media accounts/links, 466 mobile numbers and 138 IMEI numbers have been blocked to curb cybercrime.
“This is a relentless battle against cybercrime, and every citizen is a stakeholder here,” Director General of Police Alok Kumar said, urging people’s cooperation.
The harmful content and links were blocked following authorization from the Superintendent of Police (Cyber Cell).
SP Rahul Gupta informed that a notification issued by Goa government under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act grants the SP Cyber Crime powers to direct intermediaries, including service providers, to remove or block access to content that is harmful or illegal.
“This provision is an essential tool in protecting online users from activities such as identity theft, phishing, and financial fraud,” he said.
In another major step against offensive social media posts and websites scamming people, the Cyber Crime Cell blocked 157 such sites including 61 gambling in December-January. Earlier last year, 78 websites running escort services were blocked with nearly half a dozen arrests made by the Crime Branch and Cyber Crime Cell.
