In a major crackdown on illegal online betting, the Mapusa Police arrested eight individuals involved in betting on Champions Trophy cricket matches in the early hours of March 6.
Acting on prior information, a police team led by PSI Yeshwant Mandrekar raided the residence of Cipriano Coelho in Pirazona, Moira, between 12.45 am and 4 am, where the accused were caught red-handed engaging in online betting using electronic devices.
The police have arrested Pradeep Kumar Sharma (34), Omprakash Kumar Yogi (28) and Rakesh Kumar Darji (25), all from Rajasthan, Sanjay Laxmandas Lalwani (28), Deepak Sudhir Bagga (36), and Laxmikant Parasram Joshi (49), all from Maharashtra, Krishna Mahender Mukhiya (24) from Bihar and Sparsh Lalit Bhargav (32) from Delhi.
During the raid, the police seized mobile phones, laptops and other electronic gadgets worth approximately Rs 2 lakh, which were being used for online betting operations.
The case is under investigation, and authorities are probing further links to illegal betting networks.
