A team of officials attached to the South Goa district Collectorate on Sunday sealed the four units which were directed by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to suspend operations of the units for allegedly discharging untreated effluents into the adjoining water bodies.

The team led by Salcete Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar with protection from the Cuncolim police descended at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate on Sunday. Armed with the GSPCB directions, the team went about sealing the production unit of the four units, whose operations were already suspended by the management upon the GSPCB orders in the last two days.

The Salcete Mamlatdar informed that the four units had already suspended the operations as per the GSPCB directions. “What we have done today was to seal only the production unit of the four units. We did not see any production activity in the four units on Sunday,” he said.

The GSPCB had issued notices to the four units, including a fish meal plant, a fish processing unit, a distillery and an ice cold storage, to suspend the operations immediately for allegedly discharging effluents into the storm water drains, which later found its way into the water bodies outside the industrial estate.

The GSPCB has also issued notices to the four units to show cause in the coming week why the units should not be closed down for violating the provisions of the Water Act.
