PANAJI: After Chinchinim, the protest at Old Market, Margao was called off. The Church’s social organization, Social Justice and Peace, appealed for calm in the area.
Earlier in the day, the protestors, who gathered at Gandhi Circle in Old Goa, demonstrated against statements made by former RSS Goa Chief Subhash Velingkar. The Hindu leader is currently on the run while his anticipatory bail application is scheduled for hearing before the District Sessions Judge tomorrow.
However, protestors have decided to file intervention application.
Heavy police force has been deployed across several parts of Goa to prevent any further road blockades and to maintain law and order.
The State has been witnessed a tensed situation for last 3 days after the police initially delayed registered FIR against Velingkar, and are currently yet to arrest him.
As the protest intensified, the police personnel on duty are now equipped with riot gear.
However, after the appeal from the Church wing, the protestors agreed to end their demonstration and peace was restored in the area.
