MARGAO
On the eve of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Goa, Congress workers were on a different job, to give a facelift to the freedom fighters memorial at the historic Lohia Chowk, Assolna.
As the Congress leaders finalized Priyanka’s scheduled visit to the Lohia Chowk memorial to pay respect to the freedom fighters on Friday noon, local party workers suddenly realized that the memorial site was not properly maintained. They are believed to have come across broken tiles on the memorial, and the place craving for a fresh coat of paint.
If sources are to be believed, the party workers have decided to rope in painters to deck up the memorial with cosmetic changes ahead of Priyanka’s visit.
Assolna Sarpanch Xavier Almeida had promised to clean up the Lohia Chowk on Thursday since the place is used to host the weekly market.
He, however, said the panchayat has now proposed to undertake a beautification project at the Lohia Chowk at a cost of Rs 5.72 lakh.
“The panchayat had mooted a proposal to the government for sanction to take up the Lohia Chowk beautification. The government has granted the sanction, and the panchayat will now set in motion the process to get the entire place beautified by replacing the broken tiles and to give a facelift to the entire place”, Xavier said.
