Ahead of protest, CM meets Shah on quota for STs

PANAJI

Amid a statewide protest call by the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community over the delay in implementing political reservation, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought expeditious notification for granting reservation to Scheduled Tribes in the Goa Legislative Assembly ahead of the 2027 polls. Following the meeting in New Delhi, Sawant said Shah had responded positively to his request.

"Grateful for his positive assurance on my request to expedite political reservation for the Scheduled Tribes in the Goa Legislative Assembly," Sawant posted on X.

The meeting assumes significance as ST organisations have announced statewide agitations this month demanding immediate implementation of political reservation, a long-pending issue that has gained momentum ahead of the next Assembly polls.

Apart from raising the reservation issue, Sawant briefed Shah on various development initiatives and key projects being undertaken by the Goa government and sought his continued guidance. The Chief Minister also invited the Union Home Minister to attend the presentation ceremony of the President of India's Police Colours to the Goa Police. On behalf of the BJP Goa unit, Sawant further extended an invitation to Shah for the inauguration of the party's new Goa headquarters.
